“Heal the sick, cleanse the leper” (Matthew 10:8)
Faith To be healed it is very important to have faith. Our Lord Jesus Christ teaches us this when He healed the sick. • When He healed the daughter of Jairus He said: “Do not be afraid, only believe, and she will be made well” (Luke 8:50). • To the two blind men who asked Him to open their eyes, the Lord said: “Do you believe that I am able to do this?...then He touched their eyes” (Matthew 9:28), The father who asked Christ to heal his sick son, the Lord said: “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes” (Mark 9:23). The priest prays, and it is God who heals. When the sick person is healed by prayer, we bring Glory to God’s Name. If you or someone else you are praying for is healed we must always Thank God for healing him. It is not only important to heal our body physically but it is also very important to be healed spiritually, before the Sacrament of the Unction of the Sick you should Confess and then receive the Holy Communion as soon as possible after. You will actually be partaking of 3 Sacraments (Confession, Communion and Unction of the Sick) to heal your spirit AND body. “O You, the true Physician of our souls and our bodies” Who did institute this sacrament?
Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, when He said, “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.” Matthew 10:8 “Whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. And heal the sick there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.” Luke 10:8 Our fathers the apostles practiced this sacrament too. “So they went out and preached that people should repent. And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.” Mark 6:12-13 “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders (Priests) of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. James 5:14-15 Should we still seek medical assistance whenever we get sick? Of course we should do. The Holy Bible in the book of WISDOM OF SIRACH God honored the physician and their work in helping people with their diseases. “My son, do not be negligent when you are sick, but pray to The Lord and he will heal you… Keep in touch with your physician for The Lord created Him and do not let him leave you for you need him” (Wisdom of Sirach 38:9, 12) Why don’t we sometimes recover after receiving this sacrament? It could be one of many reasons; 1- It’s God’s incomprehensible wisdom: The divine wisdom that we do not understand or interpret. “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!” Romans 11:33 St. Paul himself asked for his own healing, The Lord Jesus said to him; “My Grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in weakness” Corinthians 12:9 2- Lack of faith of the person The Lord Jesus did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief. Matthew 13:58 3- Lack of repentance. 4- This sickness may be for chastisements This could be for a certain period of time then the Lord will heal the person. Ex. Miriam, Moses sister whom the Lord struck with leprosy when she spoke badly against Moses. Numbers 12 5- The sickness may be for death which is the great recovery and salvation from bodily pain.
